:) Simina Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17213508306520398825noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5969981809163328899.post-81219849095547192282014-10-22T19:07:40.447+03:002014-10-22T19:07:40.447+03:00I wish I could send you more Rom bars, Declan! I wouldn't have thought that a random purchase in a god-forsaken village store would bring forth such a passion! :)

Red vertical's praise of Colm Tóibin has aroused my interest in his novels, so I'll try one of them soon. I can understand your point of view though, the same happened to me with 'Our Circus Presents' by Lucian Dan Teodorovici, which I know you have in your library. It was too... Romanian, in a bad sense, I mean - yet I wouldn't be surprised if you liked it. I'm really curious to see what you make of it.
It would be ideal if we could separate ourselves from our familiar background and manage to be objective, but I suppose this isn't readily possible. Yet the mundane could become interesting again when seen from a fresh, original perspective.Ema Cojocaruhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15701399154011958462noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5969981809163328899.post-4250014471521325472014-10-22T12:17:00.649+03:002014-10-22T12:17:00.649+03:00Haven't read anything by John Banville, but I ...Haven't read anything by John Banville, but I will, now that you mentioned him. I might even try these memoirs, based on what Ema wrote, it seems like a worth read. I did read some Joyce and Beckett, no Flann O'Brian so far. Thanks for your recommendations. Have you tried John Banville? I think some of his books are well worth reading. Of writers from the past I would say that Joyce, Beckett and Flann O' Brien are not just three of the greatest Irish writers, but three of the world's greatest writers.

(The Rom bar has survived another day).Declanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01616441149220669840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5969981809163328899.post-28680466602097872942014-10-21T16:34:00.100+03:002014-10-21T16:34:00.100+03:00Declan, I can totally relate to your point. I've recently read The Master (having previously read Brooklyn a few years ago) and I was stunned. As I'm sure you know, it doesn't have much to do with Ireland, I loved the writing, the tone, the atmosphere a.s.o. And I've recently finished Nora Webster, which is very Irish, so probably not that fascinating as that Rom bar!L.https://www.blogger.com/profile/09104718385026827740noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5969981809163328899.post-70913913451554726182014-10-21T01:57:01.041+03:002014-10-21T01:57:01.041+03:00Hello red vertical. For me Colm Tóibin's fiction is not terribly interesting, but that's because I am overly familiar with the subject matter and characters of his books. I can well understand that for someone outside of Ireland his books could be quite fascinating and even exotic, in the same way that I find mundane aspects of life in Romania interesting. For me eating a Rom bar is quite exciting! I've still got one and I don't want to eat it because I can't get another!
